Smartphone ini memiliki dimensi tebal 9,4 mm dengan nuansa duo tone, hitam-putih. Penutup belakang yang digunakan Xiaomi memiliki bahan matte, dan tidak terlalu licin saat digenggam. Dalam hal spesifikasi, Redmi 2 mengusung prosesor Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 1,2 GHz, prosesor ini telah mendukung komputasi 64 bit.
Dibanding Redmi generasi pertama, Xiaomi melakukan upgrade prosesor dari sebelumnya Snapdragon 400 yang diusung dalam Redmi 1S.
Selain itu, kinerja smartphone juga didukung oleh RAM 1 GB dan GPU Adreno 306. Untuk penyimpanan, Redmi 2 dibekali kapasitas penyimpanan 8 GB. Terdapat slot kartu microSD bagi pengguna yang membutuhkan kapasitas penyimpanan lebih hingga 128 GB.
Konektivitas dual 4G
Smartphone ini mengusung dua slot kartu SIM yang dua-duanya mendukung jaringan 4G LTE. Namun, jaringan 4G LTE yang didukung adalah band 3(1800 MHz), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), dan 41(2500).
Dengan demikian, konsumen di Indonesia harus menunggu agak lama jika ingin menikmati layanan 4G dengan Redmi 2. Pasalnya layanan 4G yang telah resmi dikomersialisasi di Indonesia baru LTE band 8 (900 MHz).
Namun demikian, usaha Xiaomi untuk memberikan smartphone dual SIM dengan kemampuan 4G yang berjalan bersamaan (dual on 4G) layak diapresiasi, karena vendor lain belum ada yang memasarkannya di Indonesia.
Smartphone ini bisa dijadikan investasi jika kelak layanan 4G 1800 MHz jadi dikomersialisasi. Pemerintah RI sendiri menargetkan akhir tahun 2015 layanan 4G LTE 1800 MHz sudah bisa digelar.
Antarmuka MIUI 6
Smartphone dilengkapi dengan antarmuka MIUI 6 yang berjalan di atas Android versi 4.4 KitKat. MIUI adalah software antarmuka yang dikembangkan oleh Xiaomi sendiri.
Tampilan MIUI 6 sendiri terlihat lebih modern dibanding dengan stok Android. Ikon-ikon aplikasi didesain dengan tren grafis datar, mengikuti panduan material design yang direkomendasikan Google.
MIUI 6 memiliki banyak fitur tambahan dibanding versi pendahulunya. Selain itu, banyak pula fitur-fitur yang belum ada di OS stok Android.
Sebagai contoh, pengguna bisa mengatur data yang digunakan untuk masing-masing aplikasi, merekam panggilan telepon yang masuk, mengatur profile untuk kedua kartu SIM, dan sebagainya.
Pengguna juga bisa mengatur kartu SIM mana yang ingin digunakan untuk menelepon atau berkirim SMS, berdasar pada history penggunaan.
Menjelajah antarmuka MIUI 6 juga terasa cepat. Transisi antar layar juga ditampilkan dengan halus. Dan karena layarnya berukuran 4,7 inci, maka mengoperasikan smartphone dengan satu tangan terasa mudah.
Layar
Dari segi spesifikasi, tidak banyak yang berubah dalam hal layar jika membandingkan Redmi 1S dengan Redmi 2. Smartphone tetap mengusung layar ukuran 4,7 inci resolusi 720p.
Namun saat penggunaan, menatap layar Redmi 2 terasa lebih tajam, sebab Xiaomi meningkatkan warna dan rasio kontras layar Redmi 2, sehingga warnanya menjadi lebih tajam.
Selain itu, layar juga terlihat lebih terang dibanding Redmi 1S, terutama saat dilihat di bawah sinar matahari langsung.
Dan yang membedakannya dengan vendor lain, terutama Lenovo A6000, layar Redmi 2 dibuat dari kaca tahan gores buatan Asahi Dragontrail. Kesan menyentuh layar juga terasa nyaman, halus dan responnya bagus.
Xiaomi Redmi 2, bersamaan dengan Lenovo A6000, adalah beberapa smartphone pertama yang mencicipi chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. Prosesor dengan empat inti pemrosesan di dalamnya berbasis ARM Cortex A53 dan mendukung aplikasi 64-bit.
Walau masih menjalankan sistem operasi Android 4.4 KitKat, namun dukungan 64-bit yang diberikan Xiaomi seolah menyiapkan smartphone ini siap berjalan dengan OS Lollipop.
Seperti telah disebut sebelumnya, Redmi 2 memiliki RAM 1 GB dengan memori internal 8 GB.
Performa smartphone saat digunakan sehari-hari tergolong kencang dibanding smartphone entry-level lain dengan kisaran harga yang sama.
Namun, jika dibandingkan dengan pendahulunya, yaitu Redmi 1S, Redmi 2 masih terasa sedikit lamban. Hal ini kemungkinan disebabkan oleh smartphone yang menjalankan antarmuka MIUI 6 yang grafisnya lebih tinggi dibanding MIUI 5 dalam redmi 1S.
Animasi terkadang tampil lambat saat menjalankan banyak aplikasi bersamaan, seperti jejaring sosial, YouTube dan browser. Namun saat menjelajahi menu dan antarmuka, performanya cepat.
Bagi penggemar game, dukungan GPU Adreno 306 memungkinkan pengguna menjalankan aplikasi game balap ringan seperti Asphalt 8.
Kamera
Redmi 2 dibekali kamera utama 8 megapiksel di bagian belakang, dan kamera sekunder 2 megapiksel di depan.
Kamera utamanya memiliki bukaan lensa yang cukup lebar, yaitu f/2,2 yang disertai dengan lampu flash LED.
Foto yang dihasilkan oleh Redmi 2 tergolong bagus untuk smartphone dengan harga Rp 1 jutaan. Dalam setting default, hasil foto nampak kurang tersaturasi dan kontrasnya rendah. Namun hal ini bisa diatasi dengan memilih mode scene yang disediakan, termasuk HDR.
Dalam kondisi terang, metering kamera bekerja cukup akurat dan bisa digunakan memotret secara cepat tanpa lag.
Kamera juga bisa digunakan untuk memotret makro dengan jarak sekitar 2 cm dan menghasilkan efek bokeh yang bagus.
Dalam kondisi remang, performa kamera sedikit turun, terutama dalam hal penanganan bintik foto (noise). Performa kecepatan smartphone dalam mengunci fokus berkurang saat dipakai memotret di kondisi minim cahaya.
Kamera depan cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhan selfie atau video call. Namun, di kondisi minim cahaya bintik gambar yang dihasilkan akan sangat jelas terlihat.
Sementara untuk video, Redmi 2 bisa merekam video Full HD 1080p dengan audio yang lumayan pula. Salah satu fitur yang disertakan dalam mode video adalah kemampuan kamera merekam gerakan, sehingga bisa menyesuaikan fokus subyek yang bergerak.
Baterai
Baterai yang disematkan dalam Redmi 2 memiliki daya 2.200 mAh, kapasitas baterai yang standar untuk smartphone sekelasnya, dengan menggunakan beban kerja yang medium, seperti menelepon, SMS, browsing, membuka jejaring sosial dan email, smartphone bisa bertahan dari pagi hingga sore hari.
Untuk penggunaan intens, seperti browsing dan memutar video, baterai smartphone bertahan sekitar 5 jam.
Namun tentu saja umur baterai akan lebih pendek jika digunakan untuk pekerjaan berat, seperti bermain game dan tethering.
Pengalaman penggunaan
Redmi 2 memiliki penutup belakang yang bisa dilepas. Di bagian belakangnya, terdapat kompartemen baterai yang di atasnya berjajar dari kiri ke kanan adalah slot kartu micro SD, serta slot kartu micro SIM satu dan dua.
Setelah memasang baterai, Redmi 2 bisa dinyalakan dengan menekan tombol daya yang ada di sisi sebelah kanan, di bawah tombol volume up/down.
Pengalaman KompasTekno, waktu startup smartphone terasa agak lama. Dari menekan tombol hingga mengakses home screen dibutuhkan waktu sekitar 35-40 detik.
Kesimpulan
Redmi 2 merupakan salah satu pilihan smartphone Rp 1 jutaan yang tepat, dibandingkan dengan smartphone lain, keunggulannya antara lain dalam hal layar yang lebih cemerlang, hasil foto kamera, konektivitas 4G (walau belum bisa digunakan di Indonesia), serta umur baterai yang lama, mengingat smartphone ini memiliki dual slot SIM.
Namun, bodi plastik yang digunakan di penutup belakang mungkin akan membuat smartphone ini kurang disukai beberapa orang. Selain itu, warna putih yang digunakan penutup belakang juga membuat kotoran lebih mudah terlihat.
Bagaimana pun, Redmi 2 cocok bagi yang sedang mencari upgrade dari feature phone(ponsel dengan kemampuan dasar telepon/SMS) ke smartphone dengan anggaran terbatas.
Terlebih, smartphone ini juga telah siap menjalankan 4G jika akhir tahun nanti layanan 4G LTE 1800 MHz resmi digelar.
