According to a recent Korean study, it has been found out that people who get six or less than six hours of sleep at night are more likely to be at risk of developing heart diseases, stroke or diabetes.

The study said that people who sleep for fewer hours should be wary of developing metabolic syndrome. The combination of certain risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, more amount of fat in the blood sugar, extra fat around the midsection is called metabolic syndrome.

Lead author of the research, Yonsei University, South Korea’s Dr. Jang Young Kim through an email said that developing metabolic syndrome could be life threatening and could lead people to suffer from chronic diseases.

In order to reach the findings, the researchers observed around 2,600 adults for more than two years and studied their sleep patterns. The researchers based their findings from two different life surveys that questioned the participants about their sleep habits.

After evaluation it was found out that people who did not get at least six hours of sleep per night were around 41% more likely to develop metabolic syndrome in comparison to the people who received at least six to eight hours of sleep per night.

During the study, the participants also went through medical examinations and their medical history were also evaluated. The people were surveyed once in the period between 2005 and 2008 and then later again between 2008 and 2011.

These participants were again followed-up after an average of 2.6 years, it was then found out that around 22% of the participants later developed metabolic syndrome. In comparison to the people who slept for longer hours, the people who got less sleep were about 30% more at risk of developing high blood sugar and excess belly fat.
